I'm a Fucking Fitgirl but I'm not a Health Freak.

Running, crossfit, dancing, gym visits: Everywhere you look it becomes obvious that being fit is all the rage. The problem is that it doesn't stop there.

If you want to be considered a real fitgirl than you should also live a healthy life. Eat organic, take supplements and make sure you're in touch with the latest fitness and food fads.

And it's exactly this that bothers me to no end.

Don't get me wrong: I'm happy that it's no longer the heroin-chique ideal that every woman (and some men) tries to achieve. I love that thig-gaps are critisised as much as being overweight is. Skinny is definitely not equal to healthy and it was about time that Hollywood and other influential figures (fashionistas, top models, tv personalities, ...) showed their support for a healthy and active lifestyle.

Yet it wouldn't be Hollywood if they didn't take it just one step further.

When I decided that it was time to do something about my physique, I did not know what I was getting myself into. These days it's no longer a simple matter of going for a jog or registering in a gym close to home. Oh no.

That is only the beginning.

If you want to do it right, you better:

  • - Enroll in a gym

  • - Go for a jog at least 3 times a week

  • - Do home exercises

  • - Take a bunch of supplements

  • - Eat only organic

  • - NO VICES

So what is left to enjoy exactly? If every step you take needs to be considered and reconsidered so that it would fit your fitgirl/boy lifestyle?

Nothing! That's what!

The main thing this does to me personally is that it makes me feel horribly inadequate. Like I can do everything I want and yet it will never be enough.

Top that off with my tendency to go overboard in everything I do: you can guess how torn I am when it comes to my health.

Do I follow all the guidelines and basically cut all the fun stuff from my life just because "it's bad for me"?

Do I say 'fuck you health advice' and then end up feeling fat and lazy because clearly I don't put as much effort into my workouts as others do?

My answer is: FUCK BOTH THEORIES.

I just do ME. In life and in my health routines.

Me is a person who lives in constant state of trial and error. I start out really enthousiastic, overdo it and then tone it down to a level I do my best to maintain.

  • I'll have a cheat day where I don't do any exercises.

  • Sometimes I crave McDo and there's not a thing that's gonna stop me from getting that fatty food in (the guilt after is free of charge).

  • My gymtime can be 2 hours of 40 minutes and only my mood can dictate that.

  • Don't expect me to only eat organic and drink water: this girl needs her sugars and has no patience for shopping trips that look more like a treasurehunt for non-processed foods.

  • I watch my weight and figure by standing on the scale and taking my measurements whenever I want. There's no rhyme or reason to the frequency.

I firmly believe that all of us should decide for ourselves how we want to get in better shape or improve on our quality of life. Which is why I have such issues with the media ramming the allround healthy living in our throats.

If I want a belief shoved down, I'll joint a cult thanks.

Wait. Maybe fitgirls are a cult...

Which would make me the worst follower.
